A New Beginning

Years ago I was a member of the NCJW, Greater Detroit Section’s Business and Professional Women group. I enjoyed being in the organization but did not have the time to be actively involved due to work and family commitments.

When I retired, I felt the need to fill my time with purposeful and rewarding activities. How lucky I was to be asked to work with the Back 2 School Store Volunteer Committee in its first year. The one-day August Back 2 School Store event provides multiple opportunities for volunteers to help Detroit students select clothing and school supplies for the new school year.

Through this work I met bright, articulate, and dedicated women (and men) who truly were passionate about improving the lives of children. Serving as a Volunteer Committee Co-Chair for the Back 2 School Store over the following two years allowed me to continue to utilize my technology skills and to continue to be involved in this initiative.

This organization and its Board of Directors, Officers, and membership provide an important role in working for social justice and safeguarding individual rights and freedoms. I feel very fortunate to be on its Board and to now serve as Assistant Recording Secretary. It has provided an opportunity for personal growth, new learnings, advocacy, and participation in several community service projects.
