The Original Councilettes

I started joining my mother, when she volunteered at the NCJW office on McNichols and Cherrylawn, when I was twelve years old. We would sit around a big table and in production line fashion, fold, stuff and stamp mailings. I remember a warm friendly feeling of friendship.  Councilettes started in the 1950’s when I was in my sophomore year at Mumford High School. The first President was Ellen Jones, followed by Nancy Blanke Josephson, then me, then Sarah Weiner Keidan and then Janet Bing Moses. We had monthly meetings and adopted social action projects. The one I remember the most was Ship-A-Box. We gathered toys and clothes and they were shipped to Israel. Many years later I became the Social Action Chair.  My commitment to NCJW is deep and constant. My Life Membership was my birthday present for my 30th Birthday, some 50 years ago. It is where I learned the value of participating and giving back to my Jewish community. I will always believe in the mission and goals of NCJW.
