So much to be proud of

A group of NCJW women became very involved with the Baldwin Methodist Church in Pontiac that housed homeless men, women and children for many years. They also ran a soup kitchen for the area. Wish I could remember what years, late 80’s or early 90’s? Dr. Alice Hairston, who was the director of the program, appeared before the Board to tell us about the facility and their needs. She was so dynamic she won a group of us over and we couldn’t wait to help. I believe Sally Green and I were the co-chairs. We would answer the phone, help in the kitchen, bring books for the children and clothing. We collected soap and other items from our stays in hotels, which was a big help. We organized events to entertain not only the homeless clients but people in the community as well. Holiday time was always busy and we helped with their Adopt a Family program. I’m especially proud that we started the Back Pack Program for all the school children in the area and kvell so when I see how it’s mushroomed to this day and how other organizations have picked up on the idea.
